Writing Strategy - All About Books

It was quite an interesting experience learning about the All About Books writing strategy! These books can be created by young children or beginning writers (which many of my students are), on familiar topics.

I was really impressed about the value of these seemingly simple books. Because many of my students are slow learners who struggle with writing and public speaking, having them create these books will aid in the expansion of their vocabulary and the development of their oral communication. Further, I especially like that it provides them with a reason to write in an exciting, non-threatening way, that of creating their very own book.
I also welcomed the notion that the All About Books writing strategy can be created to demonstrate understanding of topics in the content areas. Many students struggle with learning content as well as showing their comprehension of knowledge gained, therefore, the All About Books strategy is an authentic way in which students can demonstrate this knowledge.

I am looking forward to having my students create All About BooksWould you like to try this strategy with your students? Click the link below for access to All About Me book patterns.

  1. Hi Erica. I found it interesting that you mentioned that the 'All about' books can be used for content area writing. I too love the versatility of these books. So many students struggle with content area writing, but by using these books, students can be provided with a simple format that they can follow,to demonstrate their understanding in a creative way. This will certainly make writing a less frustrating task.

    1. Yes Shevon, it was quite interesting to learn that it can be used with content area writing. Quite often, we as teachers tend to stick to paper and pencil tests or take home research projects, but, what a fun way to get students to demonstrate their understanding. I'm really excited to try it. We must definitely share our experiences of using it with our students, with each other when we return to the classroom.
