This week, we delved into my favourite type of writing, poetry. I love poetry because it is an easy and beautiful way to communicate my thoughts and feelings whether they are happy, angry or sad. I think that poetry is sacred, because you can be vulnerable and let the reader into your soul, sharing your deepest secrets, greatest fears or intimate desires. For other types of writing, I mainly use my intellect but poetry comes from my heart and speaks to my heart.
Our lecturer utilized a brilliant strategy to take us into poetry writing, that of a poetry walk. Different types of poetry; rhyming, funny, sad and thought-provoking to mention a few, were displayed in our classroom. We then had the opportunity to read each one in small groups and write a comment on the poster about how it made us feel and who we thought it would appeal to. There was one written by a teacher a few years ago, which really touched me as it spoke about loss of a dad. I could identify with the poet because I too have lost my dad.
Here's an example of how a poet described feelings about losing a dad:
After enjoying the poetry walk experience and seeing the effects it had on me, this is definitely one strategy I will employ in my classroom, to enable my students to reap similar benefits.
What do you like about poetry and the poetry walk?
Beautiful Erica! It is very interesting to note how dear poetry is to you, as you have expressed in you reflection. "I love poetry because it is an easy and beautiful way to communicate my thoughts and feelings whether they are happy, angry or sad". I am of the firm belief that others can say likewise.
ReplyDeleteAs it relates to your questions I can say I love how powerful they can be. The use of strong showing detail creates the vividness which locks you into the writers emotion regardless of what it may be. The poetry walk helps stimulate you mind and sets the atmosphere for learning and writing poems.

DeleteHey Shawdell, you are quite right that poetry walks stimulates the mind and sets the right atmosphere for writing poetry. After that poetry walk in class, I was motivated to write poetry. Remind me to share one of my poetry pieces with you at the next available opportunity
DeleteHi Erica. I too really enjoyed the strategy used to introduce the topic on Poetry Writing. The music and ambiance for a minute, made me forget that I was in a classroom. I was able to zone out and just appreciate each writer's expressions of emotions, so craftily put together on paper. What I also loved was the variations of moods and messages that the different pieces conveyed. I love that poetry gives you the freedom, to put your most intimate thoughts out there.
