I am qualified to extend such an invitation because during our Lit sessions this week, we gained insight into the world of descriptive writing.
According to Reading Rockets, The primary purpose of descriptive writing is to describe a person, place or thing in such a way that a picture is formed in the reader's mind. Capturing an event through descriptive writing involves paying close attention to the details by using all of your five senses. Teaching students to write more descriptively will improve their writing by making it more interesting and engaging to read. (https://www.readingrockets.org/strategies/descriptive_writing)
The visual below shows an example of various descriptive words, related to the five senses, which students can brainstorm to describe an apple.
Additionally, use of an organizer such as the one featured below, can help students with their descriptive writing.
What was most interesting to me from the session, however, were the ways to organize descriptive writing, for I had never heard of such a thing. Descriptive writing can be organized according to; spatial order, order of importance or chronological order. Knowing this will help me to thoughtfully organize my ideas when it comes to descriptive writing. It will also help me in guiding my students as they create descriptive pieces.
